Case Study — Marketing Design

Grow

2015 to 2016

Marketing Website for Grow Dashboards

I worked as Head of Design during Grow's start-up phase, mostly handling UX needs, but marketing too — I developed the wireframes for Grow.com. Collaborating with CEO Rob Nelson, we worked out the general flow of the site, and I later built hi-fidelity mocks that would serve as a catalyst for EKR, the agency we contracted to improve on the site further. I worked with Rob and EKR's team to help guide production quality. Grow's marketing team ultimately finished the site shortly after I left — it's fun to see my influence still shine through the completed site and the iterations that have come since those early days.

The Problem

No marketing site existed. I built the first one from scratch to begin Grow's story.

Grow was still a start-up, and there was nothing online to explain who we were or what the product did — nothing for a prospective customer, investor, or new hire to actually look at. Building that story from a blank page fell to me as the company's first design hire.

The Approach

Show potential customers that we offer more data connections than anyone

At the time, that was the story that made sense to tell. I researched design trends during 2016 — material design, long scrolling, and parallax effects were all the buzz. Good responsive design and micro-interactions were all important as we explored ways to bring Grow's story to life. I led discussions with Rob, and later with our VP of Product, to wireframe and bring Grow Marketing to life.

Custom Iconography

I decided to go with a linear, hollow icon treatment. We were after a clean, simple, and airy look that would feel friendly and inviting, and would let users interact with the content layered below.

Photography

The about page needed some key people posted there

We needed photos that would help our sellers stand out on social. I went with a slightly unusual look on purpose, leveraging a ring light to echo the shape of Grow's logo.

Culture & Office Design

The way I helped design our office space, and the photos I took of it, spoke to the start-up culture that took off rapidly at Grow. I later photographed our interior design and some of it landed on our initial site — I also selected and ordered furniture and worked with a builder to design an entry wall.
